Suppose we looked into the future,…

Suppose we looked into the future,…

Suppose we looked into the future, and we saw that the internet would lead to the destruction of the human race 10 years out.

Would we be able to stop the internet? Or at least, what would it take?

Bitcoiners tend to be well versed with this thought experiment, at least as far as Bitcoin is concerned. Whether Bitcoin can withstand attacks has been front and center of any serious Bitcoiner's thoughts for many years.

But let's broaden out and think about this overall thing we call the internet.

I ask the question about "would we be able to stop the internet", to more directly as the serious question: Has the internet already slipped out of our grasp?

Has the internet become so powerful, that no realistic collection of humans could get together to stop it?

And if we could stop it now, at what point in the future could we not stop it?

Because with #nostr we are more than pondering this.

I think that everyone on #nostr kinda understands what we are trying to create: we want a space for truly free speech and expression where knowledge is created.

But understand what that means. It means that we are actively working to build something that humanity as a whole, can not stop.

I am going to repeat this.

Our goal is to create an internet that is outside the ability of humans to stop.

I'm not passing judgement, but I am pondering on a rainy afternoon.

As humans, we are quite use to things outside of our control. It's called the universe. We can change parts of it, and we are quickly getting better at it, but we are use to hurricanes, volcanoes, earthquakes, bad winters and our ancestors were very familiar with asteroids, all things that were outside our control.

So on the one hand, for all of our existence we have adapted (literally) to the universe around us. An unstoppable internet would be just one more thing.

On the other hand ... I don't know.

Look at Elon vs Brazil, and view it from the moon.

Can Brazil at this point, stop the internet?

We know that North Korea apparently can, but they were kinda all set up going into the fight.

Technology solves a problem, and then create two better problems.

It's the cycle.

It's not apparent to me what the two better problems are coming our way after we make the internet unstoppable.
